Joel Bagnal graduated from Stetson University with a major in art, where he first began his goldsmithing career in elective classes under Robert Ebendorf, a young metalsmithing instructor who had recently returned from a Fullbright Fellowship in Norway. Stetson was followed by a Masters of Education from Boston University and a Masters of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing from University of Georgia.
Over the next ten years, Joel established a metalsmithing curriculum at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA; was the charter metalsmithing faculty member in the founding of Boston University’s Program in Artisanry; received a National Endowment for the Arts individual craftsmen’s grant, and founded Joel Bagnal, Goldsmith, Inc. with custom design goldsmithing shops in Wellesley and Concord, MA. Society of North American Goldsmiths Joel Bagnal Goldsmith opened for business in St. Augustine, on Aviles Street (the oldest European street in the Nation), in 2010.
“My great pleasure is the marking of special occasions with my clients. We brainstorm and sketch ideas that can only spark from the creative collaboration of craftsman and patron. And then I bring those visions into the reality of precious metals and gems. It doesn’t get much better than that.”
Coming out of high school I had no idea what I wanted to do. My mom was pushing me to try to go to college. I did not feel that was the path for me. So, my dad suggested I go to Austria and go to the school my grandfather had gone to for gunsmithing. I didn’t want to do gun smithing but my dad told me they had other things there. He thought that I would enjoy the engraving side of the school. So, we bought some plane tickets and to go see the school. My grandfather decided to tag along with us too. Once we got to see the school and all the things they did there I loved it and started learning engraving there the following year.
To fully graduate from this school, you needed to have shop time. This means I would need to spend some time in an actual trades shop on my free time. The only problem with that is I flew home for summer and winter break. I told my parents my problem and my mom set out to find me a place to get time at. She looked all over and finally came to the shop I run today, Joel Bagnal Goldsmith. She told Joel my need for shop time and he welcomed me to sit and watch him and his then apprentice do what they did. It was a great experience for both of us.
After returning home for the last time from Austria I called Joel. I wanted to see if he needed help around the shop. I just so turned out that he needed a new apprentice. I happily accepted his offer. Over the years we became close friends and on his 81st birthday he sold the business to me. Now I continue the legacy creating one of a kind pieces for our clients.
